Rules & Regulations

General Information

  • No responsibility for loss or theft of articles left in the changing rooms, ballroom or hotel rooms will be accepted by the Organizer, or the NDCA, Inc.; neither can they be held liable for any injury sustained by any persons attending the 2008 San Francisco Autumn Dance Classic.  Everyone attending does so at his or her own risk. 

  • All persons attending the 2008 San Francisco Autumn Dance Classic, whether as spectators, competitors, officials or geust of the Organizer, shall be bound by the rules and regulations of the NDCA, Inc,. and by their attendance at the 2008 San Francisco San Francisco Autumn Dance Classic are automatically obligated to adhere to said rules and regulations.

In The Ballroom

  • As seating space is limited, please order tickets as soon as possible to assure good seats.

  • Front row seats will be allocated first to Weekend Passholder, second to All-Day Passholders, and then to those ordering individual evening tickets.

  • Seating is reserved during the evening sessions; during the day sessions, seating is open.

  • There is NO SMOKING in the Ballroom.

  • In keeping with NDCA policy, NO PERSONAL VIDEO CAMERAS will be allowed in the ballroom; professional video service will be available.

  • All competitors should be in the ballroom, ready to dance, at least thirty (30) minutes before their scheduled heat.  Competitors should report to the 'on-deck' marshall at least 15 minutes before their scheduled heat.

Age Categories

  • Adult students/couples may enter their true age category AND one age category lower.

  • Preteen/Junior/Youth students/couples may enter their true age category AND one age category higher.

  • Age categories are:

    • PA:  7 & under       PT  8 –12        JU:  13-15       YH:  16-18

    • A1:  19-35              A2:  36-50      B1:  51-60       B2:  61-70       C1: 71 & over

Proficiency Levels

  • Students may enter at their declared proficiency level AND up to 2 levels higher.

  • Proficiency Levels are:

    • Newcomer

    • Intermediate Bronze          Full Bronze       Open Bronze

    • Intermediate Silver            Full Silver          Open Silver

    • Intermediate Gold             Full Gold           Open Gold

  • Students may enter different proficiency levels in different styles of dance.

  • Teachers may dance with only one student in the same individual proficiency level/age category.

  • Intermediate and Full levels are restricted to syllabus figures only.  American style should be based on the NDCA, FADS, AMI or equivalent syllabus; International style should abide by the USISTD syllabus.

  • No continuity movements are allowed in the Newcomer and Bronze categories of American Smooth.

  • An Intermediate student would differ from a Full level student by ability and experience.

  • The Organizer reserves the right to eliminate gender and age divisions, and to merge any group competition with fewer than 3 entrants.

Registration

  • Professional and Amateurs must be currently registered with the NDCA, Inc.  Registration information can be obtained at www.ndca.org or through the mail at

  • All registrations will be checked before releasing a competitor's number.

Solo Routines

  • Solo routines will be danced in sessions 2 and 4 only.  Entrant must choose a session.

  • Routines must be under 3 minutes in length, including entrance and exit.

  • Music must be on an individually recorded cd or cassette, correctly pitched, timed and cued.  Please give music to music director at least thirty (30) minutes before scheduled time of your event.

  • Figures danced in solo routines should be appropriate to the declared proficiency level of the routine.  Lifts and drops are allowed in show level routines, or where they are characteristic of the dance, or as part of the entrance or exit to the routine.

  • The five (5) most outstanding routines as marked by the judges will be invited to perform on Sunday evening in order to determine the top solo of the competition.

  • Scoring:       First place: 95-100                 Second place: 85-94         Third place: 75-84

Dress Code

  • Pro/Am events:  no restrictions; eveningwear suggested for Newcomers.

  • Solo events:  appropriate costuming within the bounds of good taste.

  • Amateur events:  no costumes in syllabus events; appropriate costuming within the bounds of good taste for all other events.

  • Preteen/Junior events:  boys in dress shirt and pants, optional tie, vest or cummerbund or black sweater.  Girls in party dresses; no sequins, rhinestones, feathers, glitter, fringe, appliqués, or similar decoration. 

  • Disregard for these rules may result in disqualification of the competitors at the sole discretion of the chairman of judges.

Late Entries

  • Closing date for entries is September 30, 2008.

  • Due to schedule limitations, acceptance of late entries is entirely at the Organizer's discretion.

  • Late entries may not appear in the printed program.

  • Late entries will not be considered in determining top teacher, top studio or top student awards.

Entry Requirements

  • Your signature on the entry and release forms implies that you have read and understood the rules and regulations, and that you agree to abide by them.  Entries without signatures will be returned.

  • In the case of minor entrants, the entry and release form must be signed by a parent or legal guardian.

  • All entries must be submitted with appropriate fees.  Fees not paid by the closing date must be paid in cash or cashier's check.  No personal checks will be accepted at the event.

Cancellations and Refunds

  • Cancellation deadline is one week prior to the event.

  • After October 17, 2008, refunds will be considered only in the event of an emergency and requests for refunds must be accompanied by a doctor's certificate.

  • Refunds granted under the above conditions will be subject to a $25 service fee.

  • Cancellations taken at the event cannot be substituted and are non-refundable.

  • Disbursement of all refunds will be made thirty (30) days after the event is concluded.

  • Organizer reserves the right to merge or cancel any event with fewer than 3 entrants.  Entries cancelled under this reservation will be fully refundable within thirty (30) days of the conclusion of the event.  Organzier also reserves the right to lower prize monies awarded if an event has fewer than 3 entrants.

Scholarship Awards and Prize Money

  • Student must have a minimum of five (5) appropriate Pro/Am groups or One Dance entries for each scholarship division entered.

  • Closed scholarships are restricted to syllabus figures only.

  • Scholarships are not divided by gender nor age.

  • Any Pro/Am couple entered in an Open Scholarship or the Open One-Dance events in a particular style may not dance in any level lower than Open Gold in that style.

  • Pro/Am Scholarships will be awarded as follows:

    • Bronze (all divisions)   1st: $300            2nd: $150             3rd: $75

    • Silver (all divisions)     1st: $300             2nd: $150            3rd: $75

    • Gold (all divisions)       1st: $300            2nd: $150            3rd: $75

    • Open (all divisions)      1st: $400            2nd: $200            3rd: $100

Organizer reserves the right to lower prize monies awarded if an event has fewer than three (3) entrants.

Junior/Youth Scholarships

  • Winners of the Junior Standard and the Junior Latin will each receive a $100 scholarship.

  • Winners of the Youth Standard and the Youth Latin will each receive a $200 scholarship.

Top Student

  • Awarded to the Lady and Gentleman with the highest point total from combined entries and placements (solos, pro/am groups, student/student groups, pro/am multi-dance events, pro/am one-dance events, and pro/am scholarships)

Top Solo Routine

  • Awarded to the highest marked solo from among the 5 outstanding solos presented on Sunday evening.

Top Studio

  • Awarded to the studio with the greatest number of entries (excluding amateur and professional events).

Top Teacher

  • Awarded to the top six qualifying professionals with the highest point total from combined entries and placements in solo, pro/am groups, student/student groups, pro/am multi-dance events, pro/am one-dance events, and pro/am scholarships.

  • To qualify for this unisex competition, professionals must have a minimum of 50 pro/am or student/student entries in the above events.

  • Late entries will not count toward either qualification or point total.

  • Point schedule is:

    • Solo Routine                             1 point/entry

    • Pro/Am Groups                        1 point/entry & 1st: 3 pts 2nd: 2 pts 3rd: 1 pt

    • Student/Student Groups            as for pro/am groups

    • Pro/Am One Dance events       as for pro/am groups

    • Pro/Am Multi-Dance events     1 point/entry & 1st: 6 pts 2nd: 4 pts 3rd: 2 pts

    • All uncontested entries will receive half points.

  • Awards for Top Teacher:

    • 1st place:      (minimum 150 entries)  $3500  (200 entries = $500 bonus)

    • 2nd place:     (minimum 75 entries)    $1500  (150 entries = $500 bonus)

    • 3rd place:     (minimum 50 entries)     $900

    • 4th place:     (minimum 50 entries)     $600

    • 5th place:     (minimum 50 entries)     $400

    • 6th place:     (minimum 50 entries)     $300
